Guralnick Lab Code of Conduct

Outreach and Career Advancement:

This lab encourages and values efforts at broader outreach to the public and reaching broader audiences. You are supported when it comes to taking part in workshops or other activities around career advancements. You are supported when it comes to taking part in activities that broaden participation, in all it forms. You are supported if you want to take part in training, whether at UF or via workshops.

As much as is possible, this support is offered financially; a lab fund is being set up in regards to this. Equal opportunity is given to all lab members for resources, guidance and advancement.

How We View Collaboration and Open Science:

We support collaboration as a better model than competition within the lab and with colleagues at UF and elsewhere. While there may be many reasons for not sharing data openly immediately, we are advocates of Open Science and reproducibility. Whenever possible, the data and software we generate is released under open licenses, a contribution we view as more important than simply churning out more papers.

Essential Policies, The Short Version:

The lab is dedicated to creating a safe environment where harassment and other forms of intimidation are not allowed. A safe environment also means that there is zero tolerance for any form of discrimination, including age, disability, appearance, sexual orientation, race, nationality, or religion (or lack thereof).

You are encouraged to share your perspective. Everyone’s perspective is valuable and should be listened to equally and respectfully. Discussions are encouraged, so long as they adhere to considerate language.

We also are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and strive to achieve these in the lab. Not only is everyone welcome to work in the lab if they follow basic guidelines, we actively seek to build a group that is diverse among multiple dimensions.

Even shorter version: You are welcome in this lab.

Reporting an Incident:

All lab members are expected to abide by the University of Florida policies on discrimination and harassment, which can be found below. If you experience or observe harassment, we recommend the following:

1) If you need to report other issues, and unless the issues are with Rob, you can bring issues to his attention; and in almost all cases he will keep issues in confidence. The reason why there is an “almost all cases” clause is because there may be issues where he is obliged to report a problem if there is an issue related to safety or welfare.

2) If you are not comfortable talking to Rob or the issue is with him, you should reach out to the Chair of the Department. In a rare case where you are not comfortable discussing an issue with the Chair or Rob, you may contact the University Ombuds Office.
